Beyond All Elaboration
A website exhibition by Robert A. Dye

Helios, 40 x 54 inches, oil on linen, 2014
…the work points to a place beyond ideas of right and wrong and beyond the excavation and expression of feelings … beyond all elaboration, where there is no more striving and no more letting go.
As Rumi said centuries ago, “There is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
From “Striving and Letting Go,” September 2026
Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks and John Moyne, The Essential Rumi (HarperCollins, 1995).

Chasm, 10 x 14 inches, plein air watercolor, 2023
One dead cricket
dog hair
sawdust
cotton thread
a bent pushpin
dead leaves
dirt.
When I sweep the studio floor, I see the pull of gravity.

Blue Boat, 6 x 10 inches, plein air oil on panel, 2026
The studio air is heavy with turpentine, making me nauseous. The dog is frowning, poor girl. A canvas tacked to the wall holds thin glistening paint. Washes of burnt sienna slide into burnt umber sliding into ivory black. The charcoal underdrawing peeks through, arcing through the depth. Paint exhales into the studio as time drips slowly, then not at all.
I have an idea, but only an idea, of where this one wants to go.

Herta's Tree, 72 x 50 inches, oil on canvas, 2026
Herta was an elderly German-born neighbor of mine in Texas. I used to do small tasks for Herta. I looked forward to hearing her stories. By her age and European heritage, she reminded me of my mother. When I moved away Herta asked me not to forget her. So, I named the new painting Herta’s Tree after I completed it. I want the world not to forget that Herta was here, and she was kind.
